Notre-Dame du Haut Ronchamp — Acoustics Under an Asymmetric Roof

A shape that looks musical doesn't always sound musical. Measurement notes from Le Corbusier's 1955 chapel and what tropical architects can learn from it.

Notre-Dame du Haut at Ronchamp, completed in 1955, has a roof that curves like a sail. Visitors expect it to sing. Our measurements say otherwise.

A shape that looks musical does not always sound musical.

The asymmetric volume produces uneven decay — beautiful to stand in, difficult to predict. It is a useful reminder that sculptural form and acoustic performance are separate problems.

Tropical architects drawn to expressive roofs should measure early, not assume the geometry will be forgiving.
