Annecy — Inclusive Public Space Through Microclimate

A lakeside public space made inclusive by three small choices: bench orientation, tree canopy scale, and water-surface treatment. Things Jakarta has yet to copy.

Annecy's lakeside works because of microclimate, not spectacle. Bench orientation catches morning sun and afternoon shade; tree canopies are sized to the path, not the photograph; the water edge is treated to cool the air moving over it.

Three small choices made a lakeside inclusive. None of them were monumental.

Each decision is small and cheap. Together they make the space usable across the day for people of very different tolerances for heat and glare.

Jakarta has the climate logic available to it and rarely uses it. The barrier is attention, not budget.
